After reviewing the design and costs of the two new office buildings and a data center planned for the eastern side of the Capitol Campus in Olympia (known as the Wheeler site), Governor Chris Gregoire has decided to take a closer look at a significantly scaled-down version of the project that mirrors her original proposal to the Legislature.
The original proposal was a single office building for the Department of Information Services (DIS) and a new data center. The scope of the project later expanded to include an additional office building and underground parking when it was determined another building project on the northwest corner of the campus, the new Heritage Center, would be built on the site of the current General Administration (GA) building. The plan to demolish the GA building led to the proposed second office building at the DIS site to house the agencies and staff displaced by the loss of the GA building.
What’s Next?
The DIS design team and project leaders will meet with OFM and GA to adjust and analyze plans for the DIS facilities. The Legislature will have to approve the newly revised plan during next session, which would then go to the State Finance Committee for financing approval. With this plan, groundbreaking would now occur next summer.
Removing the additional office building would greatly reduce the costs of the project. The agencies that were to be housed in the extra office building could be moved to leased space in Thurston County, without impacting the building schedule for the Heritage Center.
